Guitar Club (ages 8 to 10)

Guitar Club

Tuesdays after school, Max 4 participants per group. Ages 9-11. In person. On hold until Jan 2022.

Are you looking for your child to get some more experience playing music with others? That's exactly why we've set up the Guitar Club. Because music is meant to be made with others

We are looking for young, eager musicians in the making to participate in a fun learning experience.  Guitar club students practice correct technique and posture, improve their dexterity with single notes and with chords, and have fun learning songs together in a supportive, social environment.

It's a great way to put into practice everything your child has learned throughout the year. Playing with others also helps build confidence and enthusiasm. We also provide performance opportunities to the guitar club a couple of times in a year.

You're looking to expand your chord vocabulary, but where to start...

It’s important to remember that it’s not enough to just learn the chord shapes, you must also put these chords into context. When you study how they are commonly grouped together, then you can begin to develop strategies for negotiating your way through all the standard chord progressions.

The good news is that there aren’t as many different combinations as it may initially seem.

Also there are multiple song examples for any chord progression combination. In this course we will play through standard song examples with the chord diagrams clearly written in on your chart. This provides your context, all your favourite songs from the Great American Songbook..

You'll learn a new chord type or concept each week while also building on all the recent additions to your chord vocabulary. And ofcourse, you'll meet musicians and form your own jam groups outside of the classes. Let's get started!

Songwriting is one of the most exciting and expressive ways of applying what you're learning on your instrument. There's no greater reward than putting words, melodies and harmonies together in a way that's unique to you.

That's exactly what the young musicians in our Young Songwriters Comprehensive Program get to do. In this small group setting, students receive guidance and support to get in touch with and develop their own "voice," and learn how to apply it to the process of songwriting.

Community Building: In addition, YSC students make new friends and establish key musical peers. The program advocates for the pursuit of each participant's personal music goals, while guiding students to give creative support for each other and the group as a whole. We've seen close friendships and bands emerge from this program.

Eligible students have completed at least one year of training on their instrument of choice.

Students must be currently enrolled in private instruction in order to be eligible to enrol in the Young Songwriters program.

Thursday Night Jam Session: AMERICANA JAM

Wednesday Nite Blues Jam

60 minutes weekly. 4 students max. Age 19+

In person

This session is dedicated to North America’s first truly original genre: the blues. There is no shortage of material here to draw from: jammers will learn to play blues classics spanning ten decades. You will become a more proficient improviser and accompanist. Accompanists will advance their comping skills primarily over the three-chord 12-bar blues forms. Soloists will utilize the major, minor, mixolydian, pentatonic and hexatonic scales. The 12-bar blues form is an ideal chord progression to develop your phrasing and melodic development.

The techniques in this class can be applied to virtually all other contemporary genres and is a valuable foundation for the developing musician.
